decemeber already?

So, it's really close to the end of the school semester and I am excited. Besides the essays and studying for finals part, I can't wait to to have almost a month off to do nothing and just read books that aren't assigned to me to read for class. I really like it up here, but i really miss my family. Distance has really made me appreciate my family more. I feel like I'm a real adult now that I am so far away, it's kind of scary.

I register for spring 2010 classes on Dec 11! I'm currently trying to figure out a schedule, but with the classes so limited, it seems like if I do get hired for a job, my school schedule might scare them.
I'm hoping I can find a job that is really flexible.

Almost break

Well, it's almost break time! I've been staying on track with readings and homework and i must say, it feeeeels good! I can't wait to get back home and do everything, besides homework. I know I have to work on a research paper during break, but that's not that big of a deal. I just want to get done with all my readings. I've been doing really good in my statistics class, better than I thought I would. :) I might go out with some friends from school later tonight since I don't have class early in the morning! Oh, and I haven't gotten sick....yet!! Well, I hope I don't but who knows. I drink as least one cup of green tea a day, so I'm hoping that is what is keeping me healthy and I'm going to stick to it!

Halloween

So I decided to dress up at Lady GaGa for halloween this year. I bought a wig, i made a hair bow, and sewed it to the wig. Here is the creation:

Took a while to get use to the blonde hair, but I kinda like it!! Maybe in the future I'll dye it.

On another note, Hollyn drove up here for Halloween so I will be meeting up with them later tonight, maybe get pizza??

Studying

I've been studying since 11:30am today. I'm finally taking a long break to prepare dinner which will consist of:
-----Rice-a-roni fried rice
-----Top Ramen Noodles con Tofu
----- Hodgepodge of Veggies. yum.

Last night I had the best beer yet! It was a pear cider beer:

They also make apple and raspberry. Minus the guinness, I've never tried it, don't really want to.
I am still in the progress of getting my halloween costume together and getting a pumpkin so i can carve it and bake the seeds!!! yummy!!

MID-TERMS

Just on a little break from studying for my statistics midterm. So far so good. I like to question things A LOT and work through all the steps so I know what I am doing. I'm half way done with going over material and I'm actually surprised that I am not dreading it. I want to get a good grade so I am going through everything thoroughly. Plus, I love my teacher and he truly cares about the grades we get! He is very motivating and inspirational. Dr. Ben-Zeev told us a story the first day of lecture about a girl who hated everything about math and numbers, but by the end of the semester, the girl got a tattoo of a bell graph and fell in love with statistics!
don't worry mom, NOT planning on doing the same. Back to studying!

Look we made front page! :(

The cutbacks for school....here's an article that follows a SFSU student trying to get classes.
I only have one class that I literally have to fight for a seat in class. If you come late to class, you will be sitting on the counter :(. It's really sad, so much cuts backs, and tuition increases...and all we get is LESS classes, LESS seats in class, OVERCROWDED classrooms, and FURLOUGH days!!

it's starting to scare me.
here is the article:

Homework

Just wanted to updated while I took a short break from homework. I'm reading a book called "Hooked." It follows 3 drug addicts in San Francisco during their ins and out of rehab clinics, up and downs of relapses, and their progress to find on the right path back to a stable life. It's pretty interesting, but it gives me the chills while i read it and brings up some emotions that make me want to cry. But I just put down the book and get a glass of water instead.

I am interested in working with substance abuse and behavior disorder patients, but reading this book is bringing up some second thoughts. I also want to work with children as well.

While back to my studying. I'll be up all night tonight reading, writing papers, more reading and editing papers.

almost forgot, i'm going to try to minor in drama. I've always wanted to try to do some play/acting ever since I was a kid, but never got the chance to. Even during high school i wanted to, but I wasn't placed in drama as an elective because the Drama teacher played favorites!! Grrr. I emailed the director of the drama minor at school and he said to go for it! How motivating! I'm going to start classes next semester, (maybe winter classes) I'm exciting/nervous.

Hey Mom

I said I would scan my first project up here. The only problem was that somehow, on the face of one of these boys, it left spots on his face! :( but the next step would be to sew a thin piece of clear vinyl in the back so it will hold a card.

The Weekend

On Saturday, I had to take a mandatory essay exam for graduation requirements at SFSU called the JEPET. The essay was about A school that is trying to decide whether or not they should implement a "career academy" for all students. The academy would have all freshman pick a major prior to enrolling to high school and then take 4 out of 8 units. All majors range from traditional, like math and English, or specific areas, like computer repair and auto repair. The JEPET then had fake facts about the career academy, negative ones like, freshman are usually around 14 years old and the teachers that will be teaching these major are not qualified. There was also positive facts like 65% of students are more likely to stay in school if the classes they are taking are relevant to their future.

I was then to pick a stance on this topic and write an essay about it. I chose to support the career academy because I thought it would beneficial for the students.

After that test, I head up to Santa Cruz for the day to visit some old co-workers, Beau, Chris, and Jon. We checked out UC Santa Cruz and I was amazed how the campus was just like being away at camp. The campus is surrounded by tall trees and open plains, Can you imagine hiking to your class? I had a really nice time. After that we went to eat at a really good pizza place and after a few minutes of fighting over pizza toppings, we ordered a garlic and artichoke pizza. It was just delicious! and they LOADED it was artichokes, literally!! Very worth ordering it.

After we went to a old schoolmates house from University High School for a party. Needless to say it was mediocre. Being around sloppy people isn't too fun sometimes. But I did meet some genuinely nice people along the time I was there.

Now, today is sunday and the new episode of curb your enthusiasm is on and I can't wait!

Statistics Homework

Just wanted to give you guys a feel of what I'm doing up here for homework. My statistics class is by far the hardest, but most fun class I'm taking here. Math has never been a friend of mine, but I'm embracing it for all it's worth and challenging myself to do the best I can do.

Reading, reading, and more reading...

All this week has consisted of reading. Chapter after chapter, book after book. But it's all going to pay off since I'll be ready for the pop quizzes, exams, and all that.

This weekend a friend, Cassie, is going to be visiting a friend of hers in San Francisco. We're gonna meet up and explore the city together. Much needed time off from reading this weekend, so i better get on the rest of the readings so I can be totally HW free.

Giants

Went to a Giants game on Tuesday night against the Padres! I had a lot of fun although the Giants lost 3-4. The stadium was really nice and I loved the atmosphere of the fans yelling and cheering! The seats were only $5 and located by the outfield area. I was really close though! Row 3!! :) Can't wait to go again! Check out these free cups I got after the game:

Furlough days

So, My school is having mandatory furlough days this week. And I haven't been at school for a week! I had class last Wednesday, no classes on Thursday, Mandatory furlough day on Friday, Monday was a holiday, and Tuesday (today) is another furlough day.

I like the idea of having days off, but with the raise in tuition, severe cuts on classes (over 200 classes have been cut this semester!), packed and over-enrolled classes, just doesn't seem fair. Paying more...for less? I just hope I don't get discriminated against when I apply for a real job after I graduate. "Oh, you're the generation that had to have furlough days..."

So, today on this day off I will read and clean up around the apartment.

I'm also looking into making card holders, check holder, and notebook covers. It consists of recycled magazine covers, iron on vinyl, plastic clear vinyl, and sewing thread. I just have to find some cool pictures, prints, etc. I want to sell on eBay, but I'll test the waters out first. it's gonna look something like this:

Job search

So, I've been actively searching for a job since June. As of now I have applied to about 9 different places (including 1 today) and I have not heard back from any of them. I applied to H&M, American Apparel, Crossroads Trading Co., Buffalo Exchange, 3 Day care/After school programs, One kiosk job at the Westfield Mall Downtown, and Urban Outfitters. I am hoping I can get a job near school, but the Trader Joe's and Border's are not hiring....still! I'm still waiting a check from my work that is giving me some funds I have save up while working with them, so I am hoping that will arrive soon to my apartment. (edit: I did get my check when I got back from school today! Mom, you'll be getting mail very soon)

On a lighter note, I got 10 extra credit points today in my Human Sexuality class! I start my Psychological Statistics Lecture class today and I'm going to spend the rest of the afternoon cleaning up the apartment.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY not so LITTLE BROTHER!!! 20 years woooo! I love you brother.

Outsidelands

This weekend was filled with a lot of fun. My brother,Garrett, and his girlfriend, Michelle came up for OutsideLands music festival located in Golden Gate Park. I did not have a ticket, but I made my way in anyways. I got to see Matt&Kim perform right when I got in the festival. They played all the songs I wanted to hear! I also go to see M.I.A perform, but she was only mediocre. There were a lot of food, drinks, and merchandise to buy although I did not buy anything since I have no job.

I enjoed the vibe of the people around me and loved people watching while walking around the park. They even had a tent where people can play Rock Band: The Beatles edition. The set up was really cool, even a stage that looked like you were in band and performing to fans, complete with lights.

I caught the bus back to the apartment and it was crammed with people, the usual around 8pm. Literally, everyone was crammed and laughing about how it was "party bus" since it was full of intoxicated people from the festival, but I got home safe. I read a chapter in "Evolution's Rainbow" for my Human Sexuality class and I am heading to bed so I can feel rested for my second week of school.

Globalization

One of my most interesting classes has got to Globalization. This class is really going to be an eye opener for all those who are enrolled. We started off the class watching a video called, "Mardi Gras: Made in China".

Mardi Gras: Made in China follows the "bead trail" from the factory in China to Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras, poignantly exposing the inequities of globalization. First-time director David Redmon cleverly illuminates the clash of cultures by juxtaposing American excess and consumer culture against the harsh life of the Chinese factory worker.

The film confronts both cultural and economic globalism by humanizing the commodity chain from China to the United States. Redmon follows the stories of four teenage women workers in the largest Mardi Gras bead factory in the world, providing insights into their economic realities, self-sacrifice, and dreams of a better life, and the severe discipline imposed by living and working in a factory compound.

Interweaving factory life with Mardi Gras festivities, the film opens the blind eye of consumerism by visually introducing workers and festival-goers to each other. A dialogue results when bead-wearing partiers are shown images of the teenage Chinese workers and asked if they know the origin of their beads, while the factory girls view pictures of Americans exchanging beads, soliciting more beads, and decadently celebrating. The conversation reveals the glaring truth about the real benefactors of the Chinese workers' hard labor and exposes the extreme contrast between women's lives and liberty in both cultures.

Here's a Trailer of the film: (Warning it is graphic)

I recommend finding this film and watching it. Some of the things the partying people at Mardi Gras say really churned my stomach. This has got to stop somehow, it's not right. The only step I know to help stop this is exposing everyone with this video. So please send this video to friends and family.

Until I find the second step....

Do I hear birds chirping?

No...

So, ever since I came back for my going away party weekend. My apt building decided that getting new sidings to the apt would be a good idea. Sidings as in the exterior of the apt building, they are made of wood. They want to just replace them with new ones. I think it's really lame to just replaced them and not do something jazzy too! The color of the apt is a really bland color of tan, i want something flashy, like blue or pink! and yes, I have seen a blue and pink house here and it is really cool! School at 4pm today! Can't wait.

Yay for not waking up early! I'm ready to kick butt and get a 4.0 this semester!

8th ave

just settled in. leaching internet for a while. updating my cognitions along with some pictures. i love the place i live and already have crazy things happening (good things mom =] ). Miss quite a few people, but it hasn't got me homesick just yet. still need to hang my pictures of mermaids and a mirror. Haven't cooked one real meal yet. My best meal being here is breakfast this morning at Howard's Cafe on 9th street. Eggs, home style potatoes, toast, and oranges. That's my dream breakfast and I ate it today. I have a good feeling SF is gonna treat me well for the next 2 years.
